Toastmasters District Conference 2016: Cebu (Day 2)

IMG_8370Day 2 of Discon 2016 was just as fun and exciting as Day 1. Despite the lack of sleep from last night’s Fellowship Night we had to go to the venue early for the judges briefing since my friend, Stef, was a judge in the International Prepared Speech contest. The morning started off with learning sessions about Leadership and Branding. Then came lunch. Afterwards, it was contest time!

The International Prepared Speech Contest started at 1pm and was hosted by incoming District 75 Director Dulce Ranosa. All the speakers were true story tellers and I had a great time listening to one story after another. I’m sure the judges had a hard time picking their top 3. From climbing Mt. Apo to killing to a giant python to growing up in jail – their stories had me captivated from start to finish.

After the contest, there was an election of the  next district officers and then we were given time to prepare for the District Directors Ball. The theme for the District Directors Ball was Casino Royale. The ball is usually held on the last night of the District Conference. This is where we honor our district officers, past district governors, give out awards and bond with our fellow toastmasters. I see it as a grand conclusion to every discon. And this years ball was grand indeed. We were all dressed in either black or white and the room was set up like a casino with giant cards as the centerpiece of every table. I felt like I was in a James Bond set.  We were entertained by different production numbers. There was singing, dancing, gravity defying acrobatics, singing again but this time on hoverboards and a whole lot more.  IMG_8419 IMG_8421 copy IMG_8423All in all, it was a great district conference. I commend Discon Chair Benzon Lim and his team for all their effort and sacrifice in making this conference possible.

The 2016 Midyear conference this October will be in Davao. See you then!

This years Toastmasters District Conference was held in the Grand Convention Center of Cebu. The event was opened in true cebu fashion with the marching of colors and various cultural presentations. For those who are not familiar with Toastmasters, it’s an international organization that helps develop your communication and leadership skills. There are different clubs all over the Philippines. A group of clubs form an area, a group of areas form a division. We have 11 Divisions in the Philippines and they form one District – District 75.

We have 2 conferences a year. The District Conference in April and the Midyear Conference in October. The highlight of these conferences are the speech contests.

There are 4 Speech Contest Categories in Toastmasters:

  • International Prepared
  • Humorous
  • Evaluation
  • Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking)

For this Discon, the 2 contests were the International Prepared and Humorous Speech Contest. The Table Topics and Evaluation Contests are scheduled in the Midyear Conference.

discon 2015 coachella 3

In the evening was the Coachella-themed fellowship night. I loved the decor and the relaxed feel of the venue. I especially enjoyed the Tawag ng Tanghalan – the Toastmasters version of a Karaoke showdown. We got to witness a representative from each Division showcase their singing prowess for all 3 rounds. That is, if you don’t get gonged during the first round.

All in all, the first day was a blast! I met some old friends, made new ones and generally enjoyed myself. Learning can be fun. And it’s fun learning here in Toastmasters.

Toastmasters Midyear Convention 2015 – Bulacan (Day 2)

I wish I could say the 2nd day of the Midyear Conference dawned bright and clear. But I can’t because it didn’t . In fact, I woke in the midst of Typhoon Lando. I never really knew the meaning of commitment until that day. All I wanted to do was go back to sleep! But since I was the contest chair for the Evaluation Contest, I had to get up early so I could be at the Contestant Briefing at 7am.

As much as I love competing, I also love hosting. So when Sha asked me to chose between judge or contest chair, i chose the latter.

The test Speaker, Sha Nacino, gave a speech entitled “Make Your Passion Your Profession”. It was a speech I could relate to since I also believe in doing what you love for a living. She was then evaluated by the 11 contestants in the Evaluation Contest.

  • 1st Runner Up: Arthur Park – Division B (Diamond TMC)
  • 2nd Runner Up: Raxel Ann Gonzales – Division D (Barangay TMC)

After the contest, there were 2 more Educational Sessions. Since the theme for the conference was Toastmaster Hero, we got to listen to two Filipino heroes tell us about their experience and how they managed to come out triumphant despite all odds.

Jonathan Yabut is the first Apprentice Asia Challenge Winner. I learned 3 things from him that day.

First, work smart, not hard. According to Jonathan, he won the challenge not because he was smarter or better than the other contestants. He won because he chose to work smart.

Second, learn to say no. There are so many opportunities in the world today. If you want to succeed, you have to learn to say no to some of these opportunities. Because you can’t possibly take advantage of them all. The key to success is focus.

Third, leadership is about other people. It’s not about you. The true value of leadership is in stepping back, not standing out. It’s about allowing others to shine.

Midcon 2015 Chair – Gabriel Go Balauag

We all had a blast during the 2015 Midyear Conference. Kudos to Gabby, the Midyear Chair and the rest of the Midcon team for making this possible.

The best part of organizing the Midcon is everything that happens after it. I’ve been a Toastmasters since 2006 but it was only when I chose to actively lead when I found my greater purpose. Toastmasters is not only about attending two meetings a month. When you choose to lead, it can be so much more. For this conference, we focused on igniting the participants passion. To be more cognizant of the everyday heroes around us and become heroes ourselves. Through conventions, new leaders emerge.

Toastmasters Midyear Convention 2015 – Bulacan (Day 1)

Last weekend, I, along with a few other Toastmasters from Division F, flew to Manila to attend the 2015 Midyear Conference of Toastmasters held at St. Agatha Resort in Bulacan. I was excited for this conference because I’ve never been to Bulacan. I was also excited for our contestants to win in either the Evaluation or Impromptu Category. As the Club Extension Chair for Mindanao, I had to be there. I was hitting many birds with one stone.

The program started with a parade of the members from all Divisions, the District Officers and Midcon and Discon Chairs. It was then formally opened with a short message from District 75 Director Boi Archie. The message was short and sweet mainly emphasizing the theme for his term, Change Your World.

Midcon 2015 Impromptu Speech Winners

IMG_5232

Impromptu Speaking is something that most people fear, because when you stand up to speak in front, your brain has a tendency to stop functioning. But here in Toastmasters, we’ve not only perfected it (almost). We made it into a contest. Now you may be thinking, who’s crazy enough to join an impromptu speaking contest? Who would subject themselves to such torture?

Well apparently, there are a lot of crazy people in Toastmasters. And I’m one of them. Please don’t judge me.

For this years Midyear Conference, we got the chance to witness the best impromptu speakers of the 11 divisions in District 75, compete for the championship in Table Topics.

The contest quote was:

It is in moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.

-Tony Robbins

All the contestants did an awesome job. But there can only be one winner.

And it’s a back to back win for Division F! Leo and I won in the Table Topics contest in the same year so we have the exact same trophy :)

In fact, our Back to Back Victory Party is this Sunday.

It’s a great thing to win contests yourself. But it’s another thing entirely to help someone else win. I wasn’t as nervous when I competed in the Table Topics Contest (read full post HERE) in the District Conference in Palawan. But seeing my mentee step up on stage, it almost gave me a heart attack. But I shouldn’t have been nervous. Leo gave an awesome performance. I’m glad the perpetual trophy is staying with Division F!

Congratulations to all the contestants and to the winners!

Division F Speech Contest 2015

This afternoon, Division F held its Speech Contest at Grand City Hotel. Three areas – Areas 51, 52 & 53 – competed in two categories: Evaluation Contest & Table Topics Contest. Each area had 2 representatives making it 6 contestants competing per category.

division F speech contest 2015

The table topics contest was held first. Each contestant had to answer the quote: “Sometimes the question is complicated, but the answer is simple.” I was one of the judges for table topics, and judging was a completely different feeling from competing. Being a contestant is more nerve-wracking, there’s no doubt about it. The Evaluation contest came after, where there was one test speaker and all 6 contestants had to evaluate her.

I have to relinquish the Table Topics perpetual trophy during the Midyear Conference. I hope I’ll see it back at Division F soon! :) And of course, no Division F Contest will be complete without the intermission numbers. Each area had to perform and all the performers chose to sing. For a moment, I felt like I was watching The Voice – Toastmasters edition, instead of a speech contest.

Having competed (and won) in both categories at the District Level, I can really say that Area 51 has really upped its game. The competition for this afternoon was tough. But of course, there can only be one Champion. Here are the results for the Area 51 Speech Contest.

Congratulations to the winners and to all who joined! The fastest way to improve in Toastmasters is to join competitions. Joining contests allows you to be more intentional in improving your weaknesses and strengthening what you’re already good at. So to all Toastmasters out there, I challenge you to join the next competitions. Next year, it’s going to be Humorous Speech Contest and International Prepared Speech Contest. It’s nerve-wracking and mind-numbing but it’s worth it.
