Fly High

We are all meant to fly high. To soar. Yet, we are kept back by our greatest adversary – ourselves.

Just recently, I was able to attend a 2-day sales seminar by Mr. Jun Garing – founder and president of Salesman’s Centre, Inc. – a company that has trained more than 70,000 salespersons in the art of selling. The seminar was sponsored by Italpinas, the developer of Primavera Residences, Cdo’s 1st Green Condominium project. At the end of the seminar, I bought his book – The Filipino Art of Break-Through Selling. While reading it, I came across the story of the eagle and the chickens.

Many years back, a Jesuit priest in the southern Philippines found an eagle’s nest. This was unusual because most eagles’ nests are located on very tall trees. The priest discovered the nest nestled at the foot of a century-old tree. Inside it was an egg.

The priest, hoping to save the egg, took it home and placed it inside the chicken coop. When all the eggs hatched, six chicks emerged. The seventh was the eaglet. The hen took care of the eaglet as much as she did her chicks. The eaglet looked different but mother hen treated it as one of her own.

One day as the eaglet was out in the yard with the chickens, he looked up at the sky and saw a fully-grown eagle soaring high.

“Wow, I wish I could fly like that!” the eaglet said to the chickens.

“You’re a chicken,” they told him. “You can never fly like an eagle.”

The eaglet shook his head. “I know. But how I wish I could.”

The eaglet died scratching the ground.

In many ways, we are like this eaglet. We allow other people to tell us what we can or cannot do instead of discovering that for ourselves. When I was first starting in real estate, a lot of people told me, “Being a broker is too hard” or “That’s a one time big time job” or “Why not choose a safe and secure job where you get paid every 15th and 30th of the month.”

Had I chosen to listen them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. In going after your dreams, the question shouldn’t be, “What if I fail?” Failure is a part of life. It is also a part of success. Show me a man who has never failed and I’ll show you a man who has never tried. The most successful people are those who have failed many times over.

The question should be, “What if I succeed?”

Don’t be like the eaglet who allowed others to dictate who he should be. Because he listened to the other chickens, he never discovered who he truly was. He never knew that he too could soar high like that majestic eagle.

What about you? Are you allowing other people to tell you what you can or cannot do? You will never know what you are capable of until you try. And if you fail, so what? Try again. It’s only over if you give up.

“The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease for ever to be able to do it.” – JM Barrie, Peter Pan

Don’t listen to the chickens around you.

Fly high.

Go live a Truly Wealthy life!
