It’s now 2016. And with the New Year comes new years resolutions. One common resolution is to start working out. So we find ourselves at the gym, paying for a whole month, only to find ourselves slacking off after only a couple of weeks – or days.
So the question is, how can you choose a workout regimen and stick to it?
Here are 4 tips that worked for me:
First, pick a workout you enjoy. We all enjoy different things. If jogging for you is torture, then perhaps you’d be better off swimming instead. I don’t really enjoy running because I get bored after the first few rounds. Swimming, on the other hand, I enjoy. So there was this whole month that I just swam for exercise at Luxe Hotel. Find out what kind of workout you enjoy and stick to it.
Here are the workouts I enjoy doing:
- Classes such as Circuit Training, Spinning and Plyometrics
- Crossfit – my favorite kind of workout so far, minus the weights
Second, decide on a schedule and stick to it – even when you don’t feel like it.
Commitment is the key. Don’t start something then stop. When you start something, decide to see it through. Also, when you do something consistently, it becomes a habit.
For example, my workout schedule is from 5-7pm daily. There are times when I don’t feel like working out but I still go to the gym. Why? Because it has become a habit. It’s just automatic for me. At 5pm I workout and that’s that. If my schedule changes then I adjust my workout time. Once you become accustomed to working out daily, you can’t imagine being without exercise. Make it a habit. Since I committed to making exercise a part of my lifestyle, I signed up for a 1-year membership at Fit Republic. From 1,500php/month, I ended up paying just 699/month. Third, have a specific reason for working out. People workout due to different reasons. Why do you want to do it? To commit to something, we must have a big why. My “why” is because I want to be Truly Wealthy in all areas of life. And in order to do that, I must take care of my health. Plus, the bonus is you look good! Figure out what your why is so that the next time you feel like skipping the gym, you’ll remember why you’re doing it in the first place.
Fourth, make new friends. One reason why I enjoy working out is because of the fun people I’ve gotten to know at the gym. When you build relationships, your experiences take on a deeper meaning. You can also find a workout buddy and be each others accountability partner with your heath goals. You can workout together and encourage each other in achieving your goals.
