I had to opportunity to attend the Global Leadership Summit for the past 2 days. Here, I was able to listen to great speakers like John Maxwell, Bill Hybels and Melinda Gates speak on a variety of topics. One of the speakers was Jossy Chacko – the Founder and President of Empart, a global ministry that exists to ignite holistic community transformation among the unreached and needy people of Asia. Empart’s primary goal is to see 100,000 communities transformed by 2030.
His topic was about expanding leadership. Part of the process of expanding leadership is knowing how to empower people. As a leader, you cannot do everything yourself. You must raise leaders to share in the work with you so you can accomplish more as a team.
Jossy gave 3 tips on how to empower people which I found very useful so I want to share this with you.
How to Empower People
1.Focus on building the character before you empower them
Great leaders don’t just pass on information. They build character. The biggest leadership failures are not because of the lack of talent or ability, but of character. As a leader, it is your responsibility to build the character first your mentees before empowering them. Otherwise, you could be building up a potential time bomb.
2.Build a relationship with your mentees
Leadership is not about leading from the front or from the back, but alongside. The better your relationship is with your mentees, the more influential you’ll be to them. And the better you’ll be able to lead them.
3.Make sure you have agreed on the right outcomes
You cant get to where you want to go if you don’t know where you are going. From the very start, agree on an outcome. This will allow you to focus on the goal and reach it much faster. Clarity breeds competence. Make KPI’s. Evaluate. Measure.
Again, being able to empower people is key to successful leadership. Let’s take the time to carefully consider, who among our team can we empower today?
